Yo!

Misumenoides formosipes

I couldn’t keep myself from laughing when I was playing with it, and it kept throwing me gangster signs.

Also known as white-banded crap spider, this is another spider from the Thomisidae family (same as this one). The scientific name is Misumenoides formosipes, which apparetly is latin for pretty feet. Aww.

There are a few other genus in this family, with very similar spiders, and the fact that they can change their colors to match the environment makes identifying them a little difficult. The exclusive characteristic of this one is a white or yellow ridge right under its eyes. The position of the eyes helps too, but you don’t always get to see the eyes with a lot of detail.

Well, I hope this really is a Misumenoides formosipes… if not, it’s pretty close!

Some people say that their color depends on the color of the flower on which mommy spider lays her egg, other people think that they slowly adapt into being better disguised in their favorite spots. This one I found was resting on a tangerine tree, which has white flowers, so either suppositions could be right in that case.

The people I’ve shown it to, though, think that it was disguised as bird poo. Well yes, I can see that :).
