I think it’s time for a Tarantula
The spider in this picture is a Lasiodora difficilis, also known as the Brazilian fiery red tarantula. Once again, it was taken inside my house, this time in the living room (I know, that carpet needs some cleaning).
What is it about tarantulas that makes people either love them, or hate them? Is it the size, the hairiness, the slow hypnotic movements? Maybe it’s the old horror movie’s influence?
Sometimes I’m looking at pictures of them and I think it’s just downright absurd. How can nature come up with something like the Avicularia versicolor, or the Iridopelma hirsutum… it’s like they’re dressed for a rave!
One thing is certain, they have what it takes to make people get totally crazy about them. They are calm a friendly, often harmless, and they come in the most varied sizes and colors. No wonder they are such popular pets, and every now and then we get news of someone trying to sneak into an airplane with 300 spiders in their suitcase.
